Tax FAQs
Leaving it to the professionals comes with a host of benefits:
Security – Having been thoroughly vetted by HMRC in 2013, Bettertax not only deliver excellent service but our tax return service is also considered “low risk” by HMRC. Unlike many other companies, we’ll be officially registered as your tax agent with HMRC, which means we can manage, view and update you on your personal tax situation at all times. We deal with any issues you may have immediately and will never leave you with unanswered questions.
Ease – We have an agent dedicated line, saving you hours of time on hold, listening to recorded messages, option lists and being passed from one advisor to another. We make the entire process completely hassle free, managing all paperwork, calculations and communication with HMRC.
We’re on your side – We live by our reputation and if you read through just some of our 600+ client testimonials, you’ll see that we’ll provide you with an outstanding service and do everything we can to ensure you get the maximum refund you’re legally entitled to. We’re open for 50 hours per week and we work for you, not HMRC.
Expertise – In most cases our clients are legally refunded more money through us than they would get doing it themselves…even after fees and VAT have been deducted.
Experience – We’ve found that quite often individuals face HMRC agents unwilling to help them and in many cases, even given completely incorrect information. We have vast experience in managing these situations so we’ll not only get the information that’s required, we have the expertise to test its accuracy and challenge any false or inaccurate information given.
Aftercare – Our service doesn’t end with the completion of a tax return or claim and everything else we do for you is included in your original fees. This includes but is by no means limited to, free expert advice all year round, all communication with HMRC, account and tax code management, support with High Income Child Benefit Charges (HICBC), tax avoidance loan schemes, mortgage and loan applications, CSA letters and employment references.
From first contact to completion of a Self-Assessment tax return or PAYE tax refund, the process can take as little as 6-8 weeks for a CIS Subcontractor or sole trader and 8-10 weeks for PAYE employee. These time frames will typically be more than halved the second time you claim as the time it takes HMRC to register us as your agent only happens once.
The maximum HMRC will allow is the last 4 years (Unless you have outstanding issued tax returns) and your particular circumstances in each, will determine which of them we can claim for.
We know all the possible methods of proving your expenses and you can be sure that we’ll exhaust each and every last one of them, so even if you don’t have any receipts, we’ll still be able to make a claim for you in most cases.
Yes, certainly for as long as you want us to. Once you are a registered client of ours, we can assist you with completing your Self-Assessment tax return or PAYE refund claim every year. As soon as you have all your earnings or P60 at hand, you can call us to get started.
Tax codes can be affected due to HMRC’s auto-coding system. We speak to HMRC following the submission of any claim we complete to ensure that the correct code has been issued to both you and your employer. We wrote an article “Have They Changed Your Tax Code” with a better explanation.
Yes, so long as they’re within the 4 years HMRC will allow us to retrospectively amend anything previously completed or even half-completed, changing, adding or removing anything you need us to in order to get it right.
Absolutely, HMRC have a set criteria for legally claiming relief on the expenses you incur as part of your job. We’ll assess your eligibility in a quick call over the phone and let you know exactly why you do or don’t meet it.
So long as the information you give us is truthful you’ll have absolutely nothing to worry about. Bettertax were thoroughly vetted by HMRC in 2013 and this is what the HMRC Inspector of taxes had to say…
“I am happy to say that Bettertax’s processes and procedures put them in a much better position to ensure accurate Returns”
