HMRC Tax Code 2016 - 2017 1100L

Created by Rosie

We're coming up to the time of year when your PAYE tax code will change to reflect the new personal allowance.

There's been some confusion surrounding the code to be used for 2016 - 2017 because the chancellor was initially only raising the personal allowance threshold by £20 to £10800. As this met with a lot of criticism the amount was raised. It means you can earn £11000 before being taxed in the year 2016 - 2017. I would post an HMRC link to confirm this but unfortunately I can't find one that is correct, at time of writing. Theirs are still showing the original figures first proposed by the chancellor - not very useful. Reliable information can be found here.

This means your tax code from 6th April 2016 should be 1100L.

In the coming weeks HMRC will send out letters advsing you of your new tax code. It is actually important to check your code and ensure it is correct, especially if you have received a tax refund in the past. HMRC have the tendency to assume that any expenses you claimed for before will be exactly the same every year - which is utter nonsense!

Unfortunately, if your tax code is incorrect you could end up paying too much, or worse, too little tax. If you pay too little tax HMRC WILL claw it back, even though it's partly their fault for giving you the wrong code!

As a client of ours, part of our service is to deal with HMRC on your behalf and make sure you pay the correct tax. However, even though we are your tax agent, HMRC DO NOT tell us your tax code, so do please look out for any changes and let us know immediately so we can have it corrected.

OK... we issue these scam warnings fairly regularly. Any time HMRC contact you via email or text to say you have a refund waiting, be aware that it is a scam. HMRC will NEVER contact you to tell you this! Another tell take sign that things are not perhaps as they should be, is the text in red was actually in white, and so hidden - why would they do that?

Bettertax Fantasy Football League Enters It's 5th Season!

Created by Rosie

With the Premier League season almost upon us again (just how did you survive without it these last couple of months?!), we have set up our Bettertax Construction League for a 5th time!

All the rules are set out in the forum itself and also on our Fantasy Football webpage. Please read them as you do need to be in the UK construction industry to qualify for prizes.

It's FREE to join and we do have monthly Manager of the Month prizes along with prizes for the top 3 overall Managers. Gavin Cook has won the 2nd place title for the last 3 years, or is it 4... there must be other contenders! If you do join us, make sure you check regularly and keep in touch to claim any prize.

Our code is 203721-55014. If you were with us last year, you will automatically be with us again. Otherwise, simply go to the fantasy league link provided above, set up a team (you can auto complete and fiddle with it nearer the time), then go to LEAGUES, JOIN A LEAGUE and use our code.

The Fantasy rules have changed slightly agian this season, giving more wildcards and transfers, so have a shufty through those too.

Good luck everyone and what about this beard on Tim Howard? Massive!

Moving Office - Now That's Taxing!!

Created by Rosie

After 6 years, well in July it'll be that long, we have decided to make the move to a new location.

We've outgrown the space we currently have - a lovely old character building in the middle of Buckingham town centre. It's quite a decision to make as we really like where we are but our filing cabinets are bowing the old floorboards, all the computers (and of course our hard work) generate a lot of heat so that summer months do get a bit uncomfortable and being spread out over two floors we can't all be in the same room.

The new office will be located in the grounds of historic Stowe Castle. With a lovely rural location, airy working space, plenty of parking and all mod cons, it'll make work even more pleasurable!

We'll be closed on Thursday and Friday 18th and 19th June and ready to start on Monday 22nd.

Our phone number remains 01280 821020.

The new address is:

Suites 1-3
Stowe Castle Business Park
MK18 5AB

We will have a re-direct for any Royal Mail post.

Visiting Cape at Fellside CHP Plant

Created by Rosie

Our director Steve Warren made a trip up north through the breathtaking countryside of the Lake District to meet up with Cape employees based at the Fellside CHP Plant in Whitehaven.

Fellside CHP Power Plant

A beautifully warm and sunny 4.5 hour drive turned into a 9.5 hour expedition via the outskirts of such notable places as Stoke On Trent, Liverpool, Manchester, Preston, Blackburn and Blackpool! Sat Nav, eh... who'd use 'em?!

Steve's reward on hitting the Lake District, as you can see, was a glorious sunset over those peaks and mountains.

Fellside CHP plant provides critical process steam to the adjacent Sellafield nuclear reprocessing facility and exports electricity to Sellafield and onto the National Grid. It's a big place and extremely busy. The intention was to meet up with supervisors and charge-hands to explain our service and what we can do for the men working for them. Of course meeting up with existing clients is always a bonus and Steve was able to do this too.

If you are based at this power plant and saw Steve or the van, we'd love to hear from you.

If you're somewhere else, we'd be happy to come and visit you and your colleagues - let us know!
